How today’s date is determined
“Today” is determined in Riyadh time (UTC+3) and shown on both calendars:
- the Hijri date on the Umm al-Qura calendar, used for civil purposes in Saudi Arabia, as built into modern browsers;
- the Gregorian date.
The date rolls over automatically at midnight without reloading the page, and you can switch to your device’s time zone in Settings.
When does a Hijri day begin?
In civil use, printed calendars and transactions, the Hijri date changes at midnight, exactly like the Gregorian date. In religious reckoning a Hijri day begins at sunset, which is why the first night of Ramadan is the evening before its first day.
Numeric formats
Each date is shown in full, such as “12 Rabi al-Akhir 1448 AH”, and numerically as day/month/year, such as “12/04/1448”, the order used on forms and documents in Saudi Arabia.
